Meditation and the Mind: Unlocking the Inner Universe
Meditation is an ancient practice, a timeless art that has journeyed with humanity since the very beginning. It’s easy to overlook the significance of this, but think about it—while so much about our world has evolved, adapted, and transformed over centuries, meditation has remained a steadfast companion. Why? Because there is simply no substitute for the gifts it offers. Nothing else, in its simplicity, can provide the same profound blessings that meditation bestows. And that’s what makes it so powerful—it’s not a fad or a trend. It’s a cornerstone of well-being that has endured for millennia.
This article isn’t just about why you should meditate; it’s an invitation to rediscover something essential, something innate. By the end, I hope you feel inspired to explore this practice that has the potential to transform your life from the inside out.

My Path into Meditation
My introduction to meditation came in 1989, during a pivotal time in my life. I was living in London, having just returned from Australia, and found myself wrestling with the challenges of settling back into the city's fast pace. The stark contrast between the laid-back lifestyle of Melbourne and the intensity of London left me feeling ungrounded and disoriented. It was during this period of culture shock and emotional upheaval that a friend invited me to join her at a local Buddhist centre for a Tuesday evening talk and meditation session.
Little did I know that this simple invitation would lead to a profound transformation. After years of battling stress, anxiety, and bouts of depression, meditation became my refuge. For the first time in my 37 years, I experienced a sense of peace and stillness that had long eluded me. The practice offered not just a break from the constant mental noise but also a deep inner calm that felt like a lifeline in a storm.
My Experience with the Silva Method
Over the years, I’ve delved into many different meditation techniques, each offering unique insights and benefits. However, the practice that currently resonates most deeply with me is the Silva Method of Meditation. This approach has been particularly helpful in managing my busy, often restless mind. Unlike traditional forms of meditation that require quieting the mind, the Silva Method gives my mind something active to focus on, allowing me to meditate while engaging my mental energy productively.
The journey into meditation has been nothing short of life-changing. What began as a way to cope with external struggles has evolved into a pathway of personal growth, self-discovery, and mental clarity. Every practice has enriched my life in new ways, and I’m continually amazed by how adaptable and supportive meditation can be for anyone, no matter where they are in their journey.
Here are some helpful tips for beginners looking to start a meditation practice:
1. Start Small
You don't need to meditate for hours to see benefits. Start with just 5-10 minutes a day. As you grow more comfortable, you can gradually extend the time.
2. Create a Comfortable Space
Find a quiet, comfortable spot where you won’t be disturbed. It doesn’t need to be fancy—a cushion, chair, or even a corner of your room will work. The key is to feel relaxed and at ease.
3. Focus on Your Breath
Your breath is your anchor during meditation. Simply observe your natural breathing—how the air flows in and out. When your mind wanders (and it will), gently bring your focus back to your breath.
4. Be Kind to Yourself
It’s normal for your mind to wander, especially when you’re just starting. Don’t judge yourself or get frustrated. Acknowledge the distractions and gently return to your practice. Meditation is about progress, not perfection.
5. Set a Regular Time
Consistency helps build a meditation habit. Choose a time that works for you—whether it’s in the morning to set a calm tone for the day, or in the evening to unwind. Stick to it as best you can.
6. Use Guided Meditations
Guided meditation apps or videos can be incredibly helpful for beginners. They offer structure and guidance, making it easier to focus and stay on track.
7. Find a Comfortable Posture
You don’t have to sit cross-legged if it’s uncomfortable. You can meditate while sitting in a chair or even lying down. The important thing is to keep your back straight and feel supported.
8. Don’t Worry About ‘Clearing’ Your Mind
A common misconception is that meditation is about stopping all thoughts. Instead, it’s about noticing them without getting caught up in them. Think of your thoughts like clouds passing by in the sky—acknowledge them, but let them float on.
9. Practice Patience
Like any skill, meditation takes time to develop. Be patient with yourself. The benefits will come, and over time, you’ll notice improvements in your focus, awareness, and inner peace.
10. End with Gratitude
After each session, take a moment to reflect on how you feel and thank yourself for dedicating time to your well-being. Ending with a sense of gratitude can leave you feeling more positive and motivated to continue.
Starting with these simple steps will make meditation feel approachable and rewarding!
